Somkhele Poster Contest
Deadline: September 1, 2004
In solidarity with Architecture for Humanity's Siyathemba Project's call for entries to design a soccer pitch in Somkhele KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Designers Without Borders is sponsoring a poster competition. Entries should reflect the fact that this field will be the home of Somkhele's first girl's soccer league, and the significance of such an opportunity to the young women of a community struggling with high incidences of poverty, illiteracy, and AIDS. Soccer is the most popular sport in Africa, and South Africa is host to the 2010 World Cup. Posters will be used to promote girls soccer in South Africa, and possibly by the Somkhele municipality. KwaZulu-Natal is located in southeastern South Africa and is the traditional homeland of the Zulu Nation, an area rich with history. Swahili, English, and Afrikaans are the official languages. An independent panel of jurors will select a winner and three runners-up. A $10 US entry fee will be used to offset production costs of printing the poster in South Africa. Final printed size should not exceed A1 (23"x33"). Entry fees should be submitted no later than September 1st, in check or money order by mail to:designers without borders, p.o. box 2063, mount pleasant, mi 48850 USA; or electronically through the Network for Good link on the DWB website (be sure to designate "poster competition.") Competition artwork should be submitted as A4 size (8.25"x11.75"), 72dpi resolution jpegs not to exceed 150k by September 19th to wandegeya@yahoo.com. Late entries will not be considered. Winners will be notified by mid-November for a concerted announcement with Architecture for Humanity on World AIDS Day, December 1st, 2004. Judges:
