Design Brief
The theme for the 2010 CIPB Student Poster Competition was suggested by Chicagoan, Lee Crandell. Lee says “I’d love to see a competition to reinvent Chicago’s classic transit posters for today—posters about why it’s great to walk, bike and take transit (transportation that’s green, healthy, affordable and social). Transportation accounts for 1/3 of… greenhouse gases [in the United States]. It would be great to see contemporary aritsts address walking, biking and transit as attractive, modern choices that are more important today than ever before.”
During the most prolific poster-making period in Chicago (the early 20th century), transportation and tourism went hand-in-hand as the predominant theme. Posters for the North Shore and South Shore electric rail lines lured urbanites away from the city by portraying the scenic beauty of the countryside. Posters for the Elevated Lines touted various cultural destinations within the city. These posters remain a very visible part of Chicago’s historical visual landscape.
The jury of the Chicago International Poster Biennial would like to see your interpretation of the theme of travel, regardless of where you are or what you believe is the most vital issue regarding transportation that needs to be communicated today. Make a poster about rethinking transportation to impact the environment, individual health, urban infrastructure… anything is possible. Make one, great poster, and send it to us.
Criteria
- To enter, you must be a current student of graphic design or related art discipline, anywhere in the world.
- Only one entry per student will be accepted, and no subsequent changes or corrections may be sent, so make sure the entry you send is your final file.
- Final art should be uploaded as a digital file here. DO NOT SEND PRINTED COPIES. The CIPB will make print-outs for jury review, as well as exhibition prints of winning posters.
- Make final files A4 size at 300dpi, cmyk, in either high res JPEG or TIFF file format.
- There is no fee to enter.
- DEADLINE: All entries must be received by May 22, 2010. There will be no extensions.
- The CIPB will not accept any poster which it deems to have offensive content.
- The CIPB does not discriminate against any artist or designer based on nationality, race, religion, gender, or for any reason.
- Each entry becomes the property of CIPB, and the poster, or its image, may be used to promote the CIPB through publications or advertising.
- Student designers retain the creative and production rights for their own work.
Award
- The CIPB jury will determine which student posters are worthy to be finalists—and exhibited at the 2010 CIPB this summer. No specific number of student finalists is predetermined.
- One poster will be determined the best student poster of 2010 by the jury and awarded a medal and certificate.
- Any monetary award, scholarship, or any other prize is not guaranteed, but may be offered in the future, depending on funding.
