INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION: STUDENT WORK
The International Exhibition breaks from tradition in this Biennial by being wholly focused on the work of students rather than professionals. Its goal is to introduce a wide spectrum of school works and present the contemporary methods and approaches of educational institutions from around the world. An international jury consisting of significant figures in graphic design will award several prizes, including the Grand Prix of the 26th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno - Award of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the Mayor of Brno Award, and the Czech Centres' Prize awarded to a graphic designer under 35.

All works created in a school context between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2013 are eligible for the International Exhibition. Bearing in mind the limitations of space, a selection committee of designers and theoreticians of design will assess each submitted work on the basis of its originality of approach, how innovatively it deals with specific tasks, and its aesthetic and functional qualities.

You can apply for free to the International Exhibition. The application form is available online.

GRAPHIC DESIGN, EDUCATION & SCHOOLS

The Moravian Gallery in Brno, Czech Republic

Reflecting developments in graphic design and visual culture for more than 50 years now, the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno is one of the oldest and most significant events of its kind.

The theme of the 26th edition of the Brno Biennial is education in the field of graphic design and visual communication. This thematically focused biennial will - through a wide range of exhibitions, lectures and accompanying programs - investigate the educational models of contemporary graphic design as well as the methods and approaches of individual tutors and schools. It will also look at the diversity of specific schools, the influence of architecture on education, and the relationship between theory and practice.

Exceptionally, the International Exhibition, which is a traditional part of the Brno Biennial, will leave aside the work of professionals to focus instead on work created by students.

The accompanying exhibitions will map the theme of education in a range of aspects: in a variety of educational systems, school assignments and exercises; in the breadth of study materials; in an overview of historical development; and in a specific environment in which education takes place. A reader devoted to education in graphic design and visual communication will be published.

The work of educators will be represented by an exhibition project involving Grand Prix Brno Biennial laureates Cornel Windlin (2010) and Mevis & Van Deursen (2012), and an exhibition providing an overview of the work of Czech designer and educator Rostislav Vanek. The international symposium (20-22 June) will introduce important designers and design theoreticians connected with education.

A new accompaniment to this Brno Biennial will be the OFF program - an open space hosting a wide range of self-organized activities, workshops, interventions and presentations.

The 26th International Biennial of Graphic Design will be held from 19 June to 26 October 2014 in the Moravian Gallery in Brno.
