International Reggae Poster Contest announces its 3rd annual call for entries for social communication reggae poster designs. The contest has been running its yearly contest since 2011. Theme of the contest: Toward a Reggae Hall of Fame: Celebrating Great Jamaican Music. ENTRY PERIOD: July 1st, 2014 to October 1st, 2014. The goal is simple: Create a poster about Reggae Music – the rest is up to your imagination. Feel free to explore themes of Reggae covering any one of the genres; Ska, Rocksteady, Roots Reggae, Dub, Dancehall and the unique Jamaican Soundsystem. Eligibility: The Third International Reggae Poster Contest 2014 is open to designers all over the world. Posters may be designed by a single artist or by a team. Designers are allowed to submit any number of original posters. Posters should be original artworks and should not have been published in prints, internet, social media etc. Posters requirements: Posters should be designed in vertical format. JPG files of 2953×4134 pixels at a resolution of 150dpi (corresponding to 50x70cm in printed size) saved in RGB color space. There is no entry fee. Prize International Reggae Poster Contest 2014 will reward the best 100 designs by including them in various exhibitions all over the world. A book with all 100 posters will be published. The three top winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) will receive the grand prize awards, and more amazing prizes will be announced later, including lots of great reggae music.. It is a global campaign announcing a movement and acting as a catalyst for a new vision. The theme of the contest highlights this vision; “Toward a Reggae Hall of Fame, Celebrating Great Jamaican Music”. The IRPC emphasizes the globalization and pervasiveness of reggae and the positive impact of its message on the world. The contest was founded and organized by Michael Thompson and Maria Papaefstathiou in 2011. The umbrella term “reggae,” as used by the International Reggae Poster Contest, encompasses all the popular Jamaican musical genres: Ska, Rocksteady, Roots Reggae, Dub, Dancehall and the unique Jamaican Sound System. The IRPC’s success is reflected in the number of posters submitted in the two years of existence, which includes over 2000 posters from 90 countries. The primary reason for organizing the poster contest is to build an international platform to showcase a far-reaching vision: the erection of a world-class Reggae Hall of Fame Museum and Performance Center in Kingston, Jamaica that celebrates the voice, vision and vocabulary of Jamaican popular music. The ideal architect for this grand enterprise is Frank Gehry, a name synonymous with inspiring architectural design that stimulates urban transformation. The International Reggae Poster Contest is the start of a global campaign that takes advantage of the powerful tools of social media and creative expressions through the medium of the visual arts. The other important objective of the IRPC is to help raise awareness for the Alpha Boys’ School, a vocational institution for underprivileged youths, located in the heart of Kingston and founded in 1880 by the Sisters of Mercy. This school is a great Jamaican success story, producing some of the most notable legends in the history of reggae, including Don Drummond of the Skatalites, the drummer Horsemouth and Yellowman, one of dancehall’s first superstars. We think this remarkable institution should be celebrated and replicated. Without this fertile training ground, we might not have seen the flourishing of the global music we call Reggae. The IRPC exhibitions showcase over 100 reggae posters from our winners around the world as well as contributed poster art from our jury members and friends of the contest. The exhibited posters provide an opportunity to raise funds for Alpha Boys’ School through sale of a selection of the submitted and contributed posters. The IRPC held two auctions in 2012, one at the National Gallery of Jamaica in Kingston and the other at Chris Blackwell’s Strawberry Hill Hotel in Irish Town, near Kingston. These efforts raised US $8,000 and 100% went to the Alpha Boys’ School. The IRPC anticipate future auctions or sale of the posters through the contest exhibitions worldwide. The visual identity of the school has been rebranded with a fresh new logo designed by Michael Thompson. The Alpha boys need your support.
