Regulations for the Festival d'affiches de Chaumont 1999

The Year 1999 will be the 10th Chaumont poster Festival Anniversary. The theme we have chosen is music. It concerns all kinds of music, from the most classical to the most modern ones, whatever the style, the rhythm or the genre. Regulations will be mailed beginning January 1999

REGULATION 1999

Introduction The theme chosen for the 10th "Rencontres Internationales des Arts Graphiques de Chaumont" concerns music, all kinds of music, from the most classical to the most modern ones, whatever the style, the rhythm or the genre. They can be composed by either a single artist or a group. The aim of the festival is to honour worldwide production in this field over the last five years. The festival is open to graphic artists, studios and advertising agencies as well as all other institutions involved in promoting subjects of public interest. Graphic artists from all over the world are invited to participate.

Date and place The exhibitions will take place from Saturday, May 29th to Sunday, July 25th 1999. All pre-selected posters will be exhibited.

The jury will meet on Saturday, May 29th in "Les Silos, maison du livre et de l'affiche" and will announce the results of its deliberations on the same day. The jury will be made up of internationally renowned graphic artists ; the list of the jury members will be announced in March, 1999.

Rules of the competition The competition will be conducted in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of ICOGRADA, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations.

Each participant in the 10th "Rencontres des Arts Graphiques" accepts implicitly to adhere to the rules of the competition.

Artists may enter as many posters as they wish as long as they have been produced after January 1st, 1994. They have to be printed - any kind of printing process is acceptable but all entries have to be printed on paper.

Entrants of all pre-selected posters undertake to provide a duplicate of their work for exhibition purposes.

Work can be entered either individually or as a series. The organizers reserve the right to refuse entries they consider morally, politically or religiously offensive as well as work that is considered in contravention of the rules.

Entries must be addressed to : Bureau d'inscription Festival d'Affiches de Chaumont, 7/9, avenue Foch, 52000 Chaumont - France and absolutely must arrive before March, 21st.

The organizers reserve the right to refuse any poster sent to Chaumont where there is a customs payment due. To avoid this situation, posters should be declared as "printed matter, no commercial value".

Each poster entered must show the following information on the top left hand corner of the reverse side:

¿ The name of the artist ¿ The title of the poster in French or English ¿ The number of the poster

An entry form is included in each dossier. It should be filled out by the person making the entry and include a list of each poster entered with its number and any other information requested. Each form should be typed or handwritten in capital letters in English or French by starting with the family name. The form must neither be glued nor sellotaped at the back of the poster. The size of the poster must be indicated in centimeters (height and width).

Entry forms must be signed by the artist or by his/her representative. An incomplete entry form will be considered grounds for exclusion from the competition. For poster formats greater than 120 x 160 cm, a slide is obligatory.

If the poster entered is a collective effort, the names of each artist must be marked on the entry form.

The organizers reserve the right to use all information provided by the artist, as well as the right to publish or otherwise reproduce all posters entered in the competition, to ensure the promotion of the festival and of any books or catalogues published on that occasion and as part of the festival..

Posters should not be framed or mounted on cardboard. They should be carefully protected for mailing, which is the financial responsibility of the entrant. The organizers decline all responsibility for loss or damage of posters in transit.

Entries will not be returned. They will be donated to the Chaumont poster collection and kept in "Les Silos, maison du livre et de l'affiche".

Prizes and certificates A national jury made up of graphic artists with a French member of the international jury as chairman will determine the pre-selection. Certificates will be awarded for all pre-selected posters.

An international jury will award prizes and certificates to a graphic artist for the best poster or series of posters entered in the competition. First prize: 50,000 FF Second prize: 30,000 FF Third prize: 20,000 FF

The jury will also award a special diploma if it is considered appropriate. A special ICOGRADA "Excellence Award" will also be attributed.

The artist receiving the first prize will be invited to have a personal exhibition of his/her work during the 11th "Rencontres Internationales des Arts Graphiques de Chaumont" in year 2000.

The international jury will be mainly made-up principally of graphic artists. A list of the names of the jury members will be available from March 1st, 1999.

The jury The jury will meet in "Les Silos, maison du livre et de l'affiche". The results will be announced the evening of Saturday, May 29 th when the prizes are awarded.

Program A retrospective of the previous palmares will be made to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the festival. As every year, the preselection of the international competition and the student competition will be presented as well as numerous individual or thematic exhibitions. A program can be obtained after March 15th, 1999. It will also include all information about colloquiums, shows and various events occurring during the festival.
