News: Creative censorship
Posters put up last summer in Switzerland by the Sloggi underware company caused some stir. People with little appreciation for beauty demanded that the offending parts had to be covered, and they were indeed in some cities: |
Sunrise, a mobile phone company, reacted quickly and saw a chance,
rather than a problem: They printed small pieces of paper with the message "Sunrise - our coverage is getting better
and better. Sorry". In mountainous Switzerland with it's deep valleys, good areawide coverage is an important marketing
argument for a mobile phone company.
Meanwhile the Swiss Decency Commission has rejected complaints by the feminist organisation "Terre des femmes" and ruled that these posters cannot be considered sexist, because there is a close relationship between the product and the carrier of the advertising message, i.e. the women's bodies. How true. |
