Celebrating a visual history of Jazz as it has been presented in motion pictures, the exhibit illustrates a compelling selection of movie posters from big-budget Hollywood films, independent productions, soundies, semi-fictional biographies, live concert films and documentaries. From Louis Armstrong and WC Handy, to Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Cab Galloway Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and Thelonius Monk, Jazzin' Jammin' & Jivin' traces the migration of Jazz from its Southern roots in New Orleans to its growing up in Memphis, Kansas City, and Chicago to its coming of age in New York.
