M/M Paris: The Theatre Posters
2008.11.04 Tue – 11.26 Wed In November 2008, the ginza graphic gallery will present the exhibition “M/M (Paris): The Theatre Posters.” Since its foundation in 1992 as a Paris-based partnership between Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Amzalag, M/M (Paris) has continued to embrace and shock the worlds of design, fashion, and contemporary art. This exhibition introduces posters the partners have produced since 1995 for the Centre Dramatique de Bretagne (CDDB)—Theatre de Lorient. The series shows off the unique characteristics of the M/M (Paris) style of design to their fullest extent; by turns playful, loopy, naïve, aggressive, decorative, or sometimes even ugly. They create the impression of being extremely improvisational, but in fact each graphic tic or slouch is a highly controlled element in the overall composition. Individual designs resonate with each other to give the sense of a sustained visual outpouring that never once lapses into complacency or cliche. M/M (Paris) has created a graphic idiom that is both extraordinary and disarmingly fluent. The volume ggg Books - 87: M/M (Paris) will be published in conjunction with this exhibition. ginza graphic gallery
