Drinks with the neighbours - Dutch posters for genever and liqueur
From 2 February 2010 to 25 April 2010 The National Genever Museum has developed a tradition in collecting and studying old and recent Belgian posters for genever and liqueur. This exhibition looks beyond the Belgian border and showcases the creativity of 100 years of Dutch genever posters. The iconography of Dutch genever posters is very similar to that of Belgian posters advertising genever and liqueur. For example, some posters give the drink itself pride of place, whilst others depict older gentlemen drinking (thereby stressing the medicinal properties of the drink in question) or portray ladies in seductive poses. Typical features of the Dutch posters are the figures in traditional local costume or the references to the country’s own colonial past. The exhibition displays posters by such distillers as Hartevelt, Hulstkamp, Rynbende, Wenneker and Dirkzwager. A few high-profile poster campaigns are explained. The exhibition is realized in close collaboration with the Genever Museum of Schiedam, the Schiedam Municipal Museum and the Schiedam Municipal Archive. National Jenevermuseum, Hasselt, Belgium
