D Day
An exhibition of 4 graphic design studios March 17 - April 18, 2010 CAFA Art Museum, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China Consultant: Xu Bing, Wang Min
D Day stands for "Daily Design," or the everyday aspects of design in our lives. It can also stand for the "Day of Design," a day when you, the viewer, can appreciate and collaborate in the process of design. Our everyday lives are surrounded by various aspects of design. Our senses are assaulted by various publications, websites, products, all mediums of expression for designers hoping to express their vision and expertise. Their work has changed our lifestyle and influenced our perception of modern society. In a sense, our lives are "designed" by the designers in our society. But what the viewer is unaware of is the painstaking process behind each and every design project. The public is unaware of how the designer works, his relationship with the client, the user, and his own creative process. Hidden behind every design is the mental and physical process of creating a piece of art, something the public often fails to perceive. Through this exhibition, the public will be able to witness and participate the creative process of design. Four of the most groundbreaking graphic design studios in China will present their design process to the public, allowing the viewer to understand the com- plexities and nuances behind their work. I hope that through this exhibit we can become inspired to not rely on being "designed" by the professionals, but to be our own designers in life. D Day often carries connotations from WWII, representing images of sacrifice, pain, and loss and triumph. I hope that through this unique exhibit the public will be able to perceive the struggle, endurance, and ultimate triumph in the design process. Wang Min |
