News: Workshops in Hangzhou, China
received from Vivian Lee

Design Summer II is a project of design education, in which young and professional designers pass their experience on to students of design. This project is hosted by the Hangzhou Phoenix Creative International and is organized by hesign and Four-Zero Art Space. In summer vacation, there will be short-term professional training, as well as professional lectures and discussions. After the first successful “Design Summer I” in 2009, “Design Summer II” is taking place. This time, the workshop puts emphasis on poster design, photography, illustration, magazine design, font design and design concept. Over ten famous international and domestic designers will run courses and give professional lectures. The “Design Summer II” broadens the horizon of Asian design, and also enhances the quality of learning opportunities for design students and young designers.

Hangzhou Phoenix Creative International is located next to the Xiangshan Campus of the China Academy of Art. It is the most influential creative park in Hangzhou, China. Since 2008, when there was the successful Phoenix Design Festival, the park has made efforts to present professional events of culture and creativity.

Regarding the details of the workshops, please see the information below and on our website www.phoenixdesignsummer.com.

Design Summer -- Phoenix Design Workshops
Hangzhou 2010

This summer, say goodbye to your nap in the afternoon; This summer, join Phoenix Design workshops with students around the world in design field; This summer, come to Hangzhou! Come to Phoenix for "Design Summer! "
Being in the generation that information had been popularized, the spacial distance between two areas seems to be neglected, as if we could hear the breath from each other easily, no matter you are in Europe or Asia. This summer, there are international design classes in Hangzhou. Young design friends who share the same specialty, same interest, and the same dream, will have the opportunity to get together. Even if they are from different nationalities, having different cultural backgrounds, and speaking different languages, they can explore the contemporary features of design in both natural and cultural landscape.
The content of Phoenix Design Workshops include the similarities and differences between the eastern and western design classes in the contemporary world, the applications of knowledge from design classes, the present competitive situation of design, the relation between design and commerce, the transformation of design style, the background of the ideological trend of design, the influences of cultural languages on appreciation of beauty etc.
All lecturers of the workshops are outstanding designers who were born in the 70s and 80s. They not only have teaching experience, but also insight into the movement of the design market, as they work as independent designers. Despite their fame and own achievement in the professional field, they still have to face some difficulties. Those designers are going to share their unique professional views on practical experience with the students this summer.
In 12 days, you can experience life because of design; you can enjoy the diversity of design, sunshine, arts, and modern vitality.

Workshop6: Magazine Design
Content:
"Create your own free-paper in a week"
Brief
Students are asked to create a new "free-paper". Instead of redesigning an existing magazine, you are encouraged to develop your "free-paper" on any subject you like. There is no limit on the topic but you are requested to propose a "theme", which can be extended into several continuous issues.
The "theme" comes from your specific angle towards your subject, what we are looking for is the editorial direction to the selected subject, not the consumer magazine style. The biggest challenge is you are not only the art director but also the editor-in-chief for the magazine. You are able to demonstrate the editorial point of view and develop appropriate content for your magazine.
Task
Students are requested to deliver the free-paper naming, format and theme for 3 continuous issues and select one issue to be done and presented in the finished dummy with appropriate content.
