According to Wikipedia, Kickstarter is a "crowd funding website for creative projects. Kickstarter has funded a diverse array of endeavors, ranging from indie films, music and comics to journalism, video games, and food-related projects".
In other words, this is one of those social websites that are currently exploding in popularity, like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, .., and that brings together people with a great idea who have no money, with other people who think the great idea is worth supporting and would like to spend some money.
