An invitation to the exhibition of Polish Posters

Between 1st and 4th of June 2012 there will be an exhibit of POLISH POSTERS in the Crypt of St. George the Martyr Church in Borough, London, SE1.

Organised by 'Nowy Czas' newspaper as part of their cyclical project ARTeria promoting Polish artists living in London, in cooperation with renowned Cracow Poster Gallery - a leading institution in this field.

Posters are showpieces of Poland in the same way that Chopin, Wajda and Kieslowski are. In the 1960s the term 'Polish School of Posters' was coined, it referred to the varying techniques, styles and character of poster artists. The most noted artists include Henryk Tomaszewski, Eryk Lipinski, Jozef Mroszczak, Jan Lenica, Jan Mlodozeniec, Waldemar Swierzy, Roman Cieslewicz and Franciszek Starowieyski. Original in both their message and style, posters were appreciated not only in Poland but abroad as well. Today, on the streets, the artistic poster is overwhelmed by commercial advertising. Nevertheless this form of visual information continues to influence with the next generation of practitioners.

The exhibition will be divided into two parts:

I. LONDON CONNECTIONS. Posters of artists who have a connection to London - they live, work, study here or in some cases have only spent a few months here. The works displayed are partly by artists who specialise in the field, but also by those who specialise in other artistic forms but for whom poster making was important in their creative development. The exhibition will hold the works by: Michal Boncza, Monika Ciapala, Joanna Ciechanowska, Slawa Harasymowicz, Maria Kaleta, Katarzyna Kaldowska, Mariusz Kaldowski, Andrzej Klimowski, Andrzej Krauze, Zuzanna Lipinska, Justyna Niedzinska, Ryszard Rybicki, Olga Sienko and Roslaw Szaybo.

II. CRACOW POSTER GALLERY. Posters from the collection of the famous Poster Gallery in Cracow. The exhibition will display famous works from the classic time of the Polish School of Posters as well as their successors and the present generation too. Showcased will be the work of Miroslaw Adamczyk, Elzbieta Chojna, Kaja Renkas, Sabastian Kubica and Monika Starowicz.

More and more people are becoming enthusiasts of Polish Posters. Come and join them. Everyone is welcome!
