Since 1991 the Jan Koniarek Gallery in Trnava organizes the international Trnava Poster Triennial (TPT), which, under the auspices of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations ICOGRADA based in Montreal (Canada), ranks among the most significant world cultural events of the communication design art. For over two decades of the Triennial, specialized art collections of posters and graphic arts formed in the Jan Koniarek Gallery, the extent and exceptional quality of which ranks them among the major international cultural values.

Prior opening the 8th Trnava Poster Triennial 2012 (09.11.2012 - 03.02.2012) the Jan Koniarek Gallery prepared the exhibition ?PLAGAT : POSTER! - 100 posters from the history of the Trnava Poster Triennial in selection of Dusan Junek, reminiscent of the rich history of this international event. On the exhibition the Jan Koniarek Gallery cooperated with the author of the project concept, a Slovak graphic artist and designer Dusan Junek, an internationally renowned author of visual communications graphics and posters who participated as an author in many international cultural projects and exhibitions. He also initiated, and together with J.Dóka Jr. found the international Trnava Poster Triennial.

This collection presents the works of leading personalities of the world scene of graphic design and poster who significantly contributed – with their works, and many of them with personal participation in the Triennial – to the inclusion of Trnava in the cultural map of Europe and other continents. Among the displayed posters there are some that have become iconic works of the 20th century visual communications graphics and their authors became legends of this lively area of contemporary art. Good or excellent poster is a visual Esperanto which everyone understands. The proofs are the works on display. Many of them remain deeper in our memory than performances, exhibitions or events which they announced or accompanied. The exhibition contains works by world famous graphic studios from New York (Push Pin Studio), London (Pentagram Design), Paris (Studio GRAPUS) up to Tokyo (Japan Advertising Artists Club). Their authors are the graphic art personalities who adumbrated and shaped the ways of contemporary world graphic design. They are from among the Swiss precision typographical school, the Polish painting and graphic schools of poster, the Japanese art of characters and artistic ingenuity, the French visual contrivance, humor and charm, the American provoking relaxed idea and shape, or the current wave of Chinese and Iranian attack that is instantly reminding us the elements of ancient cultures. This world of artistic diversity and exceptional qualities is not only the evidence of mastery of its authors, but their work is an accurate and rigorous testimony of time transformations. They are its paper mirror. Poster of today is not the primary medium of communication, but compared with ephemeral digital world, it remained the most attractive space for personal messages of authors relating to human topics of all kinds.

The exhibition ?PLAGAT : POSTER! proves it in the selection of authors and works representing the zenith of poster production of the second half of the 20th century. It is just a fraction of the extraordinary collection of the Jan Koniarek Gallery in Trnava, currently containing more than five thousand works by leading graphic artists from around the world.

The current exhibition is also an attractive invitation to the upcoming 8th international Trnava Poster Triennial which opens its doors this autumn.
