INTRODUCTION
poster for tomorrow – run by the 4tomorrow organisation - is an international poster competition based on human rights issues that affect us all. The best 100 posters, as selected by an international jury of renowned, are exhibited around the world on International Human Rights Day. As well as the annual poster contest, 4 tomorrow organises graphic design workshops and debates on civic responsibility and empowerment of the individual across the world in partnership with graphic design schools and universities, for students, graphic designers and governmental institutions and NGOs. And since 2012 4tomorrow has extended its activities to secondary schools across France. 4tomorrow’s goal on a simple level is to encourage people, both in and outside the design community, to make posters to stimulate debate on issues that affect us all. We believe that graphic design can contribute to positive change in society on an individual and civil level. “One poster is a start, but one hundred, one thousand, constitute a movement that can’t be denied.” Four years and thousands of posters after our first edition, we feel that poster for tomorrow is well on the way to becoming a genuine movement. We’re an organisation that hosts debates, seminars, conferences, workshops and exhibitions in schools, universities and governmental institutions. We’ve had the support of The United Nations Democracy Fund, UNESCO and Amnesty International and many more. We’ve been to every continent in the world and every year we continue to grow. 2012 - GENDER EQUALITY NOW! As long as girls and women are valued less, fed less, fed last, overworked, underpaid, not schooled and subjected to violence in and out of their homes – the potential of the human family to create a peaceful, prosperous world will not be realised. Hilary Clinton, at the UN 4th World Conference on Women, Beijing, China, 1995. We chose gender equality as the theme for our 2012 edition. As by repressing women, society represses itself and denies itself the opportunity to flourish. What world can succeed when half the people in it are abused or subjugated? Asking for gender equality isn’t asking for much – simply that women are given the same opportunities as men and enjoy the right to live without fear of exploitation and discrimination. We need gender equality now for a better world for all of us. On October 5th an international jury of renowned graphic designers (male and female), led by Alain Le Quernec (France) and moderated by Guy Schockaert (Belgium) met to select the 100 best posters from amongst the 3020 entries received from 105 countries in this year’s contest. The jury members were: Majid Abassi (Iran), Christina Chiapini (Italy), Gitte Just (Denmark), Maria Magdalena Kurpik (Poland), Malte Martin (France) Leilia Musfi (Lebanon), Michel Olivier (France), Carolina Rojas (Colombia), Paula Troxler (Switzerland) and Rene Wanner (Switzerland). Michelle Bachelet, former president of Chile, Executive Director of UN Women, and ambassador of Gender Equality Now! “They say a picture’s worth a thousand words. But we don’t need a thousand words to spread the message of Gender Equality Now! Gender quality isn't just a problem for women, it's a right for all. With this campaign, poster for tomorrow brings the dream of gender quality to life, and one step closer to realization.” MORE THAN 30 EXHIBITIONS ALREADY CONFIRMED FOR 10/12/2012 Exhibitions already confirmed for International Human Rights day include: Armenia/Yerevan, Belgium/Bruxelles, Bolivia/La Paz, Bosnia and Herzegivinia/Sarajevo, Botswana/Gaborone, Bresil/Sao Paulo, Bresil/Rio de Janeiro, Canada/Quebec, Colombia/Bogota, Ecuador/Quito, Ecuador/Santo Domingo, France/Chaumont, France/Le renouard, France/Aix en Provence, France/Armentières, France/Paris, Germany/Heidelberg, India/Ahmadabad, Lebanon/Beiruth, Morocco/Marrakech, Mexico/Guadalajara, Mexico/Morélia, Mexico/Mexico city, Pakistan/Karachi, Pakistan/Lahore, Portugal/Lisbone, Qatar/Doha, South Africa/Johanesbourg, The Netherlands/Amsterdam, The Netherlands/Breda, Tunisia/Sfax, Tunisia/Tunis, Turkey/Istanbul, USA/Gainesville, Venezuela/Caracas EXHIBITION LAUNCH - PARIS / ARTS DECORATIFS / 6 - 9 DECEMBER 2012 The premiere of the 100 best posters from this year’s edition will once again be held in Paris at the Arts Décoratifs (103 rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris) in collaboration with our partner organizations.
