Friday, March 4, through Sunday, March 27, 2016
Opening March 3, 2016 17:00

Rennert's Gallery
26 West 17th Street
New York, NY 10011, USA

On Friday, March 4, 2016, Rennert’s Gallery, home of Posters Please, will present the largest retrospective and sale of the work of Leonetto Cappiello ever held in the United States.

Cappiello occupies a unique niche in the history of posters, having essentially invented the Modern visual advertisement. His work immediately captures the attention the viewer, associating it in one’s mind with the product or service offered even when that image may have little to do with the advertised item. He solidified the concepts of a brand image and a company mascot – tropes still used today to sell all manner of items.

Over 50 of the artist’s most celebrated posters will be on display, including a variety of rare large-format billboards from the Golden Age of advertising. Particular highlights include his designs for Chocolat Klaus, Cachou Lajaunie, Absinthe Ducros Fils, Biscotines Union, Cognac Robin, Maurin Quina, Triple-Sec Fournier, Cognac Pellisson, Cinzano, Poulain-Orange, Longines, Thermogene, Le Nil, the original artwork for Gallus, Contratto, Florio & Cinzano, Campari, and many more!

There will be a special opening reception for the show on Thursday, March 3, from 5:00-7:30, where cocktails and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

The exhibition and sale is free and open to the public from Friday, March 4, through Sunday, March 27. Gallery hours are Mon-Fri, 9-6; Sat/Sun, 11-6.
