Reading Posters: Material Aspects of Poster Design
Department of Typography & Graphic Communication, University of Reading, England
20 September 2017, 10.00-18.15
Price for participants: GBP 30.00

This Study Day, hosted by the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading, will showcase the Department’s collections and expertise. It is an event organised for members of the UK Posters Network (one of the Subject Specialist Networks supported by Arts Council England in order to share knowledge, news and expertise) but is also open for other interested guests to attend.

The day offers a unique opportunity to learn about particular aspects of the Reading collections and of current research undertaken by the Department’s academic staff. Speakers during the morning will include Michael Twyman, The distribution of posters: exploring sources, Eric Kindel, Stencilled posters in Paris in the 19th century, Rick Poynor, David King and the constructivist poster and Rob Banham, Vauxhall Gardens posters.

During the afternoon there will be practical demonstrations of some of the printmaking techniques associated with posters – including letterpress, lithography and linocut. These will be explained and demonstrated through the Department’s magnificent range of historical presses, tools and equipment. There is also the opportunity to look behind-the-scenes at some of the poster archives within Reading’s unrivalled collections of lettering, printing and graphic design, such as the fascinating collection of National Savings Posters. There will also be some examples from individual archives, such as the Otto and Marie Neurath Isotype Collection, on display.

Coffee and tea refreshments are included in the price, and there is the chance to network with fellow participants over a complimentary glass of wine at the end of the day. A café for lunch (not included) is nearby and a room will also be available for those who wish to bring a packed lunch.

Please email Laura Weill, l.weill@reading.ac.uk, if you are interested to attend.
