WEB POSTER EXHIBITION - Remembering Guy Schockaert

Guy Schockaert, graphic designer from Belgium, and ICOGRADA President 1997 - 1999, died in the morning hours of January 11, 2013, from cancer at the age of 63.

Guy was well known in the graphic design community and liked to travel and to represent ICOGRADA, even after his term as president had expired, so he was often called "Mr. ICOGRADA". Many poster designers received ICOGRADA awards from his hands, and he was well liked and respected. Although much younger than I am, he was a father figure for me; whenever I spotted him at an event I felt safe. If Guy was there, everything was OK and in good order.

Below are some pictures that I took since we first met in Warsaw.

Guy had a black hat and if he liked somebody, he put it on his head and took a picture. There must be hundreds of them in his picture archive.

Once Guy was present when a poster designer generously offered to sell me some of his posters. Guy gently reminded the young man "You don't sell posters to Rene, you give it to him".

In Chaumont in 2010, Guy told me about problems with his health that prevented him going to the poster biennials in Warsaw and Brno in 2010. Looking at the picture at left, in retrospect, should have made it clear to me that the situation was more serious than he made it sound then.

I followed him on facebook but did not meet him again until October 2012 in Paris where he served as "moderator" in the jury of the poster competition Poster for tomorrow. He was in the midst of a chemotherapy and had lost all his hair, but seemed relaxed and happy and took an active part in the jury discussions.

Quite unexpectedly, I run into Guy again briefly in Echirolles in November 2012. His hair had started to grow again and I had hopes that the worst was over and he would recover.

But then, on January 11, his daughter announced his passing by mobile phone on facebook, and a few hours later I received his last email

Dear friends. I left our world this morning convinced that a paradise exists somewhere for graphic designers. My computer will be mute from now on. I loved you all.

Guy Schockaert

Immediately, expressions of sorrow and condolence from all over the world began to appear on Guy's wall in facebook. Feeling sad and helpless, I passed the news on Twitter.
