WEB POSTER EXHIBITION - New posters from Hamid Mosaddegh, Iran
received from Hamid Mosaddegh

The work of Hamid Mosaddegh, a graphic designer from Tehran, has recently been featured in an article in Novum, and he used the occasion to send me some of his recent posters, and asked me for my comments, which are shown below:

The future.
What we do, and don't do, today is a vote that will shape our future world. It is a democratic vote that reflects the actions and thoughts of each of us. While I don't underestimate the importance of Steve Jobs for example, we would not have 2 billion smart phones if not so many people had decided that this is what they wanted. We also would not have them without the thousands of engineers that developed them, nor the thousands of sales people that sold them, nor the millions of teachers that educated the buyers. We also would not have drones, nuclear power, pornography or Facebook if there was no demand for it. Whether each of us can change the world, or my actions are just raindrops in an ocean, is another question that I ponder each time I fill out a ballot form. Personally my answer is Yes.

What does this have to do with Hamid Mosaddegh's posters?
Hamid has for years designed posters that have little to do with the posters that have been made by Jules Cheret, Ikko Tanaka or Uwe Loesch, for example. There is some formal similarity, his posters use about a square meter of paper, pictures, some text but not much, ballanced composition, color, an idea and so on. But the content is not "Buy a Porsche", "Take Viagra", "Oppose climate change, or the death penalty", "See Tosca or Titanic".

His posters are rather comments, personal feelings, thoughts, moods. In the past, some people used to write poetry, or draw pictures of the mountains, for their own pleasure, do pottery or knit baby clothes, somtime giving them away to friends. Hamid communicates by using his education and talent and the tools of graphic design, and the internet. His posters do not appear in the big international poster competitions, nor on the streets. But somehow they open a door to a new world. If more people follow the path, this could become a common form of art or communication, and with his posters he has cast a vote in this direction. There is no assurance that this will happen, he could well be one of the last poster designers before they disappeared from the earth, like the people who write handwritten letters, the watchmakers or the bear hunters, but he did something the shapes our future. The videos that the kids put on youtube are other votes, but who will win the election remains to be seen.

Beauty.
Some years ago, I had a discussion with Niklaus Troxler about the colors in one of his posters. "I don't like it, they scratch my eyes", I said. Niklaus replied "Maybe the colors are intended to scratch your eyes, on purpose". That was one of the informal but important lessons in graphic design that I received. My sense of color had been calibrated by looking at the colors of Jan Mlodozeniec which I called "beautiful", anything else was "ugly", but Troxler's question gave me an entirely new look on color. It boils down to the old question "What is beauty?". There are endless (and useless) discussions about this topic, but for practical purposes I use two questions to get an answer: 1) "Would I cross a busy street to find out who made the poster?" to determine if the poster is good; 2) "Would I hang it up in my living room?" to find out if it is beautiful. Today, many posters are interesting, provocative, clever, shocking, elegant, disturbing, informative, funny, but not so many are beautiful.
Hamid Mosaddegh's posters would pass both questions with "yes".
