Leszek Zebrowski should be on a list of endangered species. He is one of
the few remaining poster artists working exclusively with his bare hands,
typography included. Using a trusted old russian airbrush machine,
he even sprays directly on the printers metal plate, which
eliminates one step in the reproduction process. This has not only
economic advantages, of which Zebrowski is well aware, working far from the
honey pots of the polish capital in his native provincial town of Szczecin.
Another consequence of this technique is an incredible richness in detail
and tonal values in his posters.
I must confess that the poster for the play Ferdydurke by Witold Gombrowicz, showing a nude female sitting on a man's head, made me a Zebrowski fan. Anyone who was able to render the tender firmness of that bottom so convincingly had to be a true master of his craft. He recently took up the theme again in a poster for a Blues festival, and seems to enjoy tossing ideas around in his head and try them out in several variations - birds, horses, masks, eyes, exploding faces and even toilets. Above all, he keeps up the great polish tradition of portrait posters, as you will discover in the following pages. Click on a picture below to see more of Zebrowski's posters: |
