WEB POSTER EXHIBITION - Festival d'Affiches de Chaumont 1998

Exhibitions

Chaumont abounds with exhibitions during the festival:

The 84 selected works from the photography poster competition were shown in an abandoned warehouse, like Koji Mizutani's poster below.

The same building housed several student exhibitions. The most remarkable was that of Alain Le Quernec's class at the College Brizeux, a high school in Brittany. He says "I want to give my students the chance to do a real poster campaign, on a real problem, with a real client and a real budget", and lets them create posters on smoking, drugs, alcoholism, racism. It takes a lot of courage to stand up against the tobacco industry, and I am sure that Le Quernec's students learn much more than graphic design from him. Their work was recognized with a silver medal in Brno for an anti-drug poster.

The one-man exhibition of jury member, renowned theater poster designer and photographer Holger Matthies took place in a deserted theater, unfortunately under far less favorable conditions than those of Ralph Schraivogel or Makoto Saito.

Makoto Saito laureate exhibition

Makoto Saito is the recipient of last years 3rd prize for his poster Ba - Tsu, pret-a-porter for a fashion company. His laureate exhibition took place in the Grand Garage, a huge three story high hall, maybe a former bus terminal. His large format posters filled the space easily, and I had the impression that any smaller room would not do them justice. An ideal place, and if you know Makoto Saito's posters only from small reproductions in catalogues, as I did, you don't know what you are missing.
